Currently, most formal Chinese language programs overseas begin at the kindergarten level. However, due to historical reasons, many existing textbooks are designed for first graders. Some schools adapt these materials for kindergarten, but the content is often too difficult for young learners. Others spend an entire year solely teaching Pinyin or Zhuyin, which children often find tedious and confusing—especially when learning English pronunciation simultaneously. Some use early childhood Chinese materials focused on reciting songs or rhymes, but these rarely support long-term language development. In short, most existing materials and methods fail to fully tap into the learning potential of kindergarten students.

Kindergarten marks the first year of formal Chinese language learning, a crucial stage for establishing effective study habits and nurturing genuine interest in the language. Drawing from seven years of teaching experience at Enlighten Chinese School and many years of overseas education practice, we have developed and published the Fun with Chinese curriculum.

This program is specifically designed around the language development characteristics of Chinese American children, using a character recognition and reading “snowball” approach that gradually builds learning momentum. It effectively fosters curiosity and engagement while laying a strong foundation for future Chinese study.
